All across Tennessee, community colleges are seeing record numbers of students this fall, thanks to a simple but sweeping promise from the state: free college education for everyone. (by Katie Lobosco, CNN Money) – Lawmakers approved legislation Wednesday that will expand the Tennessee Promise program that launched in 2014. From the state: Qualifying Tennessee adults can receive aid to attend a TCAT, community college or university. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam announced during his State of the State address Monday that all adult residents will be able to attend the state's community colleges tuition- and fee-free. Last month we noted that Tennessee was looking to expand its efforts to offer tuition-free access to state community colleges to include adult students as well. Tennessee Promise is a last-dollar scholarship, meaning it will cover tuition and mandatory fees not already covered by Pell grant, HOPE scholarship, and Tennessee Student Assistance Award. Thus, eligible nontraditional students will not be able to receive UT Promise funds until they have completed 12 hours and meet the minimum GPA requirement for nontraditional HOPE. High School seniors may apply for the Tennessee Promise scholarship, which will provide two (2) years of tuition-free starting in November of each year. In addition, Tennessee Promise participants must complete eight (8) hours of community service each semester they are enrolled, as well as maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA at their institution. Tennessee Promise was initiated to give all high school seniors access to two years free of community college and technical education. As part of the program, students will be provided a mentor who will support them during the college enrollment process.
