The origin of the word is the Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, originally founded in 1247, making it likely the oldest psychiatric hospital in Western Civilization.
Towards the end of the 18th century, a moral treatment movement developed, that implemented more humane, psychosocial and personalized approaches. Today, most mental patients, or service users as they are now called, live out in the community and the asylums have all but disappeared.

The film explores the history of the mental asylums in Britain in the past 60 years through powerful testimonies from patients, nurses, doctors, and health care experts.
