Franklin, an experienced explorer and Royal Navy officer, had taken part in three Arctic expeditions, the latter two as commanding officer. In 1845, Captain Sir John Franklin and his crew set sail from England aboard two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, on an expedition to explore the Arctic. HMS Erebus is a Hecla-class bomb vessel constructed by the Royal Navy in Pembroke dockyard, Wales, in 1826.The vessel was the second in the Royal Navy named after Erebus, the dark region of Hades in Greek mythology. Two 100-foot military ships, reinforced with iron and crewed by men and officers experienced in the Arctic, set out to find the fabled northern sea route from Europe to Asia. It was at this point that the expedition experienced its first fatality when the EREBUS'S boatswain fell overboard and drowned.
