Photo: RNZ Photo: RNZ The Serious Fraud Office says it is on track to make a call before this year's election on whether to lay charges in relation to the New Zealand First Foundation, which has been bankrolling the New Zealand First Party. It was revealed by Radio NZ this morning that donations made to the NZ First Foundation came from some of New Zealand’s wealthiest and most powerful people.
A glance at history suggests the scale of the problem. NZ First leader Winston Peters says there is a separation between the party and the foundation. The foundation, which has bankrolled NZ First using secret donations from rich business people, spent more than $130,000 on a company run by Brian Henry – the personal lawyer and close friend of Peters.
Leaks of NZ First Foundation records raise big questions about the party’s funding, and there’s every chance of more to come. So $130,000 is paid to a company run by Winston’s lawyer – Brian Henry. The New Zealand First Foundation received $100,000 in just one week from two rich-listers, whose donations remained secret because the individual payments fell below the disclosure threshold. The Brexit Party also contributed to Clayton Mitchell's trip. Donations made to NZ First Foundation referred to Serious Fraud Office by police.
