About MEV. Northrop Grumman's Mission Extension Vehicle-1 (MEV-1) launched today (Oct. 9) from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, kicking off a first-of-its-kind commercial-servicing mission. Northrop Grumman's spacecraft MEV-1 successfully docked with IS-901 on Feb. 25.
In a historic first, Northrop Grumman's privately built MEV-1 satellite servicing spacecraft captures the Intelsat 901 communications satellite on Feb. 25, 2020. MEV-1 will then move on to provide mission extension services to a new client spacecraft. MEV-1 was designed and built at the Northrop Grumman’s Dulles, Virginia, facility and utilizes a low-risk mechanical docking system that attaches to existing features on the client satellite. MEV is designed to dock to geostationary satellites whose fuel is nearly depleted. The Mission Extension Vehicle-1, the industry’s first satellite life extension vehicle, completed its first docking to a client satellite, Intelsat IS-901 on February 25, 2020.
