The Saturn I (pronounced "Saturn one") was a rocket designed as the United States' first medium lift launch vehicle for up to 20,000-pound (9,100 kg) low Earth orbit payloads. Figure 5:Preliminary concept of Launch Complex 34, Cape Canaveral.
The United States launched 32 Saturn rockets between 1961 and 1975.

First test of Saturn IB. Previous plans were to conduct the Saturn IB launches from LC-34, a part of the U.S. Air Force Eastern Test Range used by NASA, a tenant at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
The first firing, on October 27, 1961, was followed by nine more successful launches.

All Saturn IB flights, beginning with SA-201, should carry operational spacecraft, including equipment for extensive testing of the spacecraft systems in earth orbit.
The Saturn IB was originally used to launch Apollo lunar spacecraft into Earth orbit, to train for manned flights to the Moon. NASA ordered twelve complete Saturn 1B launch vehicles and parts of two others. Some components that had already been manufactured for S-IV-111 and S-IV-112 had to be scrapped.
